Two ways to view video on the web
Progressive Download
Progressive download works by downloading the entire video to your hard disk. However, you don't have to wait for the whole file to download to start watching it. Using fast start, once enough of the file has been transferred, the video starts playing automatically. Progressive download is best for high-quality, relatively short video clips and offers better quality video at low bandwidths than does streaming.
Streaming
Streaming keeps your computer in constant contact with a server running the movie. Digital data is transferred, displayed and then discarded once you've seen it. If the end user's connection is too slow, or the network experiences congestion, the data transfer rate may be reduced in order to preserve the real-time playback. This type of media delivery is best suited for longer video clips.
